A Toronto business adored by many will be closing down a location that's been open for 3o years
I don't typically indulge in making sweeping generalizations about any one group's experiences living in Toronto, but I do think it would be fair to say that if you, like me, are a Gen Z or Milennial who grew up on the east side of the city, it's more than likely that at least one pair of shoes came from Corso Shoes.
In my case, it was my parents' go-to destination for rainboots and sneakers, although they never let me splurge for the ones with light-up soles, much to my chagrin, and I was just one of many spanning from Danforth to the Beaches, who made their semi-regular pilgrimages to be fitted by the friendly faces at one of Corso's three locations.
Despite all the history, it'll soon be the end of an era for the chain's Riverdale location, as the Danforth BIA confirms the store will be closing down in the coming weeks after 30 years in the neighbourhood.
"After 30 incredible years of putting our best foot forward, it's time to say goodbye to a beloved staple of GreekTown on the Danforth BIA—Corso Shoes," the BIA writes in the caption of the post.
"Located at 446 Danforth Ave, Corso has been more than just a shoe store. It's been a place where generations found the perfect fit, shared stories, and felt at home."
According to the post, the shop will be shutting down this June, and while no official reason for the closure was given, some of the store's fans took to the comment section to hypothesize that a landlord issue could be the culprit.
"Very sad their landlord wouldn’t let them stay," one resident comments. "It was a great place in our area and provided a wonderful service to many."
It's not all bad news, though.
The business also has locations in the Beaches (1942 Queen St. E.) and at Danforth and Woodbine (2000 Danforth Ave.), and an employee of Corso Shoes has confirmed to blogTO that both are set to remain in business for the foreseeable future.
Corso Shoes Danforth is located at 446 Danforth Ave.
