Record-breaking Canada's Wonderland coaster crosses biggest milestone yet

Canada's Wonderland is preparing to enter the record books with its long-awaited AlpenFury launch coaster, soon to become the longest, tallest and fastest launch coaster in the country with more inversions than any other roller coaster on the continent.

The ride has been under construction since last year, a process which crossed an important milestone this week when crews completed the coaster's track installation ahead of a planned spring opening — a target window that will close in just a few weeks.

Wonderland spokesperson Grace Peacock tells blogTO that the ride's "track is now complete," a huge step forward for what will soon become the park's flagship attraction.

"The team installed the last piece of track around 10 p.m. [Tuesday] night," says Peacock.

There had been rumours of construction challenges throughout the track's installation process, most recently with rumblings that partial track disassemblies and reinstallations were evidence of alignment issues.

However, Peacock explains that "adjustments to columns is normal during the installation process."

There is still much work ahead before the coaster welcomes its first riders, with Peacock explaining that while "things look finished, we still have a lot of work [involving] testing and commissioning the ride, which will take a couple of weeks. This process involves cycling the trains hundreds of times, plus a final inspection by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA)."

While Wonderland has yet to reveal an official opening date for the attraction beyond the vague "spring" promise, Peacock hints that "guests should see the first AlpenFury train moving on that track shortly, which will be very exciting."

The park released a detailed construction update on the new attraction on Thursday morning, as the race to open AlpenFury heats up.

AlpenFury will hurtle riders on a kilometre-long track that launches out of the park's iconic Wonder Mountain, boasting nine inversions on trains reaching blistering top speeds of 115 km/h.
